Welcome to my second Metamorphosis Monday, hosted by Susan at Between Naps on the Porch.Be sure to visit her blogsite for pictures of her lovely home, as well as some great ideas.
Unfortunately, we didn't take pictures of the "before" (3 years ago) because frankly, we were thirlled to be getting rid of that look! So....imagine stained cabinets, green paint on the soffet, and white formica countertops. We usually do things in stages.....my DH stalks a product for a while and then we get it....then it starts over again. He really liked Silestone countertops, so we replaced our formica with them first - love 'em! A year later we found a guy who is EXCELLENT at re-doing cabinets. Since we liked our solid wood raised panel cabinets, we chose to have them painted and glazed. But, before we did that we removed the soffet above the kitchen sink to give some height - one of my favorite changes! Also we added 7 canned lights and sent the flourescent light to the graveyard. We decided to have the island done in black. It is distressed, but hard to see in the photo. This is a large kitchen/sitting area (keeping room), so I'll give a panoramic view and then pose a question.
Closer view of window over sink
Yes, the oven is new....no, the surface unit is not. It is 30 years old and still working like a charm. We'd love to replace it, but we don't replace things that are working. I know something else would look better, but..... Hey, my washer and dryer don't match because my washer lasted 25 years and my dryer lasted 38 years! Go figure!

Moving around the room, there's my grandmother's sewing machine. She made EVERYTHING the family of 6 wore - even my grandfather's shirts and pants! That was the Depression for you.
(Plus a lot of talent)

You've already seen my cabinet redone by my daughter. I did add a blue plate the other day and soon I'll find a new home for the sound equipment! I've got a stack of blue dishes, etc. in the basement asking to come upstairs again. (I also love the idea of covering a board with fabric to brighten up the back of the cupboard...on the lookout for something.)

Check out the 2nd window - no window treatments : (

Check out the bay window - no window treatments.

See my Rooster pillows on the bench that Debbie at Confessions of a Plate Addict talked me into getting - I'm glad she did!

Back to the beginning and window #1. I have brought a lot of red into the kitchen and I'm dragging it across the whole room. I thought it would help tie the blue (chair and toile sofa)and red, etc., together. (This would have been easier if we had done everything at once, but we do things in stages!) I can't decide what style to do....don't want to block the windows. We have gorgeous trees in the backyard. Sooooo.....my questions for you window treatment lovers...
a. Do you think the fabric works? or something different?
b. Is it better to have a curved shape or a straight shape with pleats for 2 windows and a bay?
c. I've even thought of bamboo shades just sticking out from under a tailored valance.
This treatment is just make-shift right now...up on a tension rod.
If you have any thoughts or suggestions of things you have done or seen, please let me know. I would love to say the kitchen is finished! Thanks so much for visiting. Next time I'll have to fix something with a lot of calories and serve some hot tea. Be sure and visit Susan at Between Naps on the Porch and see who's participating in Metamorphosis Monday. Thanks so much for dropping by!

Salut mon amie!! Je ne sais pas pourquoi tu me poses cette question quand c'est toi qui sais coudre! Tes rideaux sont tous beaux! Et j'ADORE encore les coqs!!! Bisous...Debbie
I don't know what Debbie said,but I love everything you've done.And those pillows are amazing...Ann
Your pictures turned out really good! I'm impressed! The only thing they don't (and can't, really) show is just how much BETTER the lighting looks, particularly the under the cabinet lighting! I'm anxious to see what suggestions people have, because I just can't get a hold on what to do with the bay window!
What a beautiful kitchen. I love the white cabinets and the black island. The red as an accent is just perfect. Beautifully done. Hugs, Marty
Oh I really do love the after and I can try to imagine the before. You made some great choices for your space!!
Wonderful makeover!!
Beautiful kitchen... I love it!
Hi Linda,
I LOVE your kitchen...great job on everything! I don't replace things that still work either. LOL I still have my original washer (28 years old) but I'm on my third dryer...weird, huh? :-) About your question, I'm not sure why your link always is the end of the post. I tried clicking on the title of your post which normally puts the exact address of that post in the address bar, which is what you would normally copy to Mr. Linky as your permalink...but it didn't give me the permalink. Wish I could be of more help on that but I'm just not sure what is going on. Looks like folks are finding the post, though...so that's good. Thanks for a great MM post! Susan
A gorgeous kitchen!
I'm thinking of doing my cabinets a creamy white.. now you've inspired me... I love the colors... everything is so beautiful!
hugs. Dixie
I really like your kitchen!! Great job done.
Kathy :)
Your cabinets are beautiful! That's what I'd like to do with ours. I'm lost on the kitchen windows too, so don't feel bad... I'll be reading to see what suggestions others make. ♥ Diane
Hi Linda,
I was just thinking about the link problem you were having...and wondering...when you created your post, did you put anything in the box that says "Title?" From the dashboard, you can go to "edit post" and click on your Met Monday post, to check. If not, just add a title. Then you can right click on the title after you publish the post, choose "copy shortcut" to get the exact link that gets pasted into Mr. Linky. I don't know if I'm explaining it well and that may not be the problem...just thought I'd ask in case. :-)

Great redo, makes me think its time to do anothe rupdate on my kitchen!
I love everything you've done. The cabinets look great and I think the window treatment would be perfect. Where did you find your couch and chair? They are wonderful, and I'm looking for new ones. Cindy
Debbie thought I meant her post, in my last comment on her blog about pigs, bunnies, and roosters. I didn't. I just keep running into them on so many blogs. I love them though, and your pillows are a perfect accent for a kitchen/dining area. The colors work wonderfully to tie everything together.
We really need to replace our counter tops. I'll have to check out Silestone. Yours looks absolutely gorgeous.
On the window treatments, I really can't offer any suggestions. I currently have valances and mini blinds (which I detest the blinds). A recent post on plantation shutters/blinds appealed to me, so that is another subject I need to research further.
I really like what you did in your redo and thanks for giving me more to think about before we begin what will take a good while to complete. We tend to do things in stages also.
I like it all! I especially love that sewing machine;) What a beauty but the cabinets look great! French;)
Your kitchen is amazing, you've done a great job of a redo over time. The best way to approach a redo in my book!
Love that sewing machine table & I think the fabric works great. Happy Met Monday!
Bonjour J'adore la cuisine.
I love it and I can't even imagine the before.
Thanks for letting us in your beautiful kitchen.
Love Claudie
claudie.frid.com I do not use my blogger acc.
Love your kitchen. I'm planning on painting my cabinets just like yours. I was undecided about painting my island black, but after seeing yours, I'm sold.
Thanks for sharing.
Everything is gorgeous !! Love all your color combinations.
Lovely kitchen! It's great that you don't replace things that don't need replacing! So many people do.I have mismatched appliances in my kitchen.
Manuela
Hello Linda - thanks for inviting us over to your kitchen for Met Monday!
I quite like the fabric you've chosen for your windows. I don't mind the valance... in fact I like that it's longer on the sides because it makes it look more interesting.
What I'm thinking, though, could work on all your windows (bay window included) = roman blinds. I made one for my kitchen window and I love it! They look great opened... I know that's important to you because you said you like the view out your window... but they can also look good closed.
Good luck with this project!

You did a beautiful job on your kitchen. I love the contrast of the black island with the creamy white of the cabinets. Don't you love the silestone counter? They are the best. Your windows are beautiful, I'm like you, I would hate to lose the view, maybe roman blinds? Great post, and I know you love your new kitchen. Kathy (ps, love the painting above the sewing machine)
Your kitchen looks so beautiful with the white cabinets and the black contrasting island. The touches of red add a wonderful splash of color. The roaster pilows look awesome there.
My grandmother also had a singer sewing machine in a cabinet which looked so much like your grandmothers:) It brought back sweet memories. Great post!
♥♥♥
What ever Debbie said is all French to me...but I am sure she said this kitchen is beatiful and thanks for sharing with us..hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
Just love the kitchen, and the blue toile sofa!
What a beautiful kitchen. I prefer the window without the treatment. Your windows are so pretty- they don't need embellishment.
