and....Today's Thrifty Treasures, hosted by Rhoda at Southern Hospitality. Her post will have some wonderful thrifty finds.
First I am updating last week's update....but before I do that, in honor of our past and present soldiers, I thought I'd show you this lovely display of some insignia and the Purple Heart that belonged to my father-in-law. We all have lots of stuff that is enjoyable, and then we have treasures like this, or your grandmother's treadle sewing machine, or your aunt's china, or your father's watch, etc. These are the things that are really valuable because they evoke family and those precious memories that we all have. However, I had 2 stacks of books and numerous pics left sitting on the floor for the week.
I told my daughter that I had received a few comments from people, saying that I could put in more books, and so she just redid the whole thing! I like the way she kept my 2 favorite Childcraft books with nursery rhymes and fairy tales that my mother read to me so many, many times. Also, my favorite Nancy Drews books are there, along with a couple of series of Oke books and the wonderful Thoene series "Zion Covenant". I re-read the Zion series periodically!
I like the way she included my mother's high school class, father-in-law's medals, my favorite family pic, clusters of old family pics, wedding albums, baby books.....my treasures.
Now I have 2 questions that maybe you can help me with:

I am showing a thrifty find from last week. I am still in shock over this country French chair I found at GW....why would anyone get rid of it? I talked myself out of it, and then went back and got it the next day....you can ALWAYS use an extra chair!
Now I have 2 questions that maybe you can help me with:1. How do you type a line through a word in a blog and yet keep the word?
2. What in the world does the word "meme" mean? (I'm showing my ignorance, but I keep seeing it.)
Be sure and stop by Susan's at Between Naps on the Porch, and also go visit Rhoda at Southern Hospitality. Have a Happy Monday Memorial Day. So thankful for our troops, Linda

Meme as in same?
Thank you for sharing the purple heart with us. What a treasure and a reminder to take pause and give tribute to those who have served their country as well as those still serving.
I love the bookcase with all your treasures in it. Your daughter did a fabulous job. Just gorgeous. How wonder to have the medals of your FIL. They are such family treasures. All of our service men and women always desire all of our gratitude and thanks. Your chair is just fabulous. What a great find. I don't know how to put a line through a word and I don't know what meme means. Guess I'm not really too smart. Hugs, Marty
I really like that you added some books back in. And I love the display of all of your family treasures, they are certainly the things that matter the most! Sorry, I don't know how to do the line through the word thing, I've asked and asked and no one will tell me - it must be a bloggy secret! And I'm not sure why events are called meme's? Sorry couldn't be more help, I'm still pretty green at this. Kathy
Hi Linda,
I had to look meme up again, check this out... http://thedailymeme.com/what-is-a-meme/ (I don't think the term is used correctly sometimes.)
Next time I read a blog with the word lined through, I'm going to ask how they did that, cuz I can't find it!
Love the chair - what a fantastic find and Daughter great a great bookcase re-do for you! Great post! ☺ Diane
I love the books added! She did a great job! Love seeing the purple hearts!
meme, means the type of blog you are linking to: as when you link your post to Susan's. The meme is Tablescape Thursday, Now If I am wrong someone set me straight! Strike thru only happens to me after I have done spell check and saved a draft, then edit to add more photo from my Pictures. If I spell check again, it will strike through my wrong spelling and not let me fix it! I always hate that! Now someone may what you want, better than I! I wish I knew how everyone is adding their post after my comments! I tried with no luck! All you great ladies out there, Please give us a little help!
Oh! I got into the meme thing! I adore your chair! What a great find! I found two chairs, that need a little TLC, have not shown them as yet!
That chair is so pretty! I still can't believe you found it at GW! Thanks for having us over. I think you need to post the recipe for those chocolate cookies....YUMMMMMMMM!!!!!!
Your daughter did a great job! I am in love with that chair!! Thanks for asking 2 questions I wanted to know the answer to also :)!
I love the chair -- I agree with you, why would anyone want to get rid of that?!? It would even look great painted a white and then distressed.
I just wrote out the directions on how to strikethrough text, but the comment form won't let me submit a comment with HTML tags, so I had to delete it. If you email me, I'll email you the directions on how to do it. It's super simple. :)
Hi Linda. Thanks for sharing your finds with us today. Hope you have a great MD tomorrow.
Hi Linda,
I love how your daughter re-arranged the bookcase, it looks so classy and pretty! Wonderful GW chair too! I am no help on the techie bloggy questions. Have a nice Memorial day. Cindy
Evening, Linda! Oh, I love how your daughter redid your bookshelves. I have a hard time getting this right. Love all of your olden treasures. I was a huge Nancy Drew fan as a child, myself and have a couple of my childhood books. Loved the Hardy Boys too!
Now that chair is gorgeous! It looks brand new!
I was always too embarrassed to ask what Meme meant. I just thought it was the term used to join a group like Blue Monday, Pink Saturday or Met Mondays.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia :0
Looks like you already got a lot of answers as to what meme means. Your daughter did a great job on the book shelves, great display of mementos and family treasures...Christine
I haven't read the other comments, so I don't know if someone answered. Months ago, when someone ask me to do a meme, I went to the online dictionary and looked it up. It is an idea that spreads from person to person within a culture. (I guess blogging is a culture). Your French chair is wonderful, and your shelves look fabulous. laurie
Your bookcase came out wonderful, I think its wonderful how you displayed the Purple Heart, its a family treasure.
I love that chair!!! How could you not buy it. Thanks for sharing.
Love how you displayed your father-in-laws purple heart. What a great treasure to have.
That chair is fabulous. I'm with you--how could someone get rid of it. Oh well, now you have a new and wonderful treasure.
I love that you showed your FIL's Purple Heart. It's important to remember the reason for the holiday! I Googled how to strike out a word, but it was too complicated for me. Why can't it be as easy as it was to do on an old-fashioned typewriter?!
Thank you for asking the two questions I have been wondering about :). Love the redo your daughter did (I thought yours was great too) on the bookcase. And lovin that you shared your FIL medals...we need to remember all that our service men & women have done and are still doing for this great country we live in and the freedom we enjoy. Great chair!
Toni
Great post Linda...loved seeing your FIL medals those are just priceless..how wonderful your book case looks...great having a daughter to do that for you my friend...May you have a wonderful Memorial day...hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
Hi Linda! I'm doing this one in English! I, too, recently looked up "meme" and found just what Laurie said...something that spreads from one person to another in a culture. I think it is used correctly in reference to our "awards" which are really chain letters, but I'm not so sure that our events are memes. It comes from the Greek word mimeme...to mimick. The explanations on the web sites are long and complicated sociological ones and examples I found were from "Where's the beef?" to religious practices. The drawing the line thing...let me know when you find out!! lol I hope you are having a great weekend! I love your bookcase redo and you know I HEART that chair! Who in the world gives away such a gem??? A bientôt...Debbie
Glad to get some answers to the meaning of "meme." I figured that the strikethrough has to be an html code thing, but I'm pretty ignorant about html.
I recently downloaded and started using Windows Live Writer, which I just love. It gives you the option of doing a strike through just like you change something to bold or italic.
I like what your daughter did with the bookcase, but I'm wondering what happened to the two Old Britain Castles pieces. Are they still there and just hiding, or did you put them somewhere else?
Hi, Nina, the bookcases look very nice & oh, what a cute Frenchy chair. That's a great find.
I use Windows Live Writer & like someone said, it gives you the strikethrough option on the toolbar, much easier than remembering html. Try it out, you'll love it!
According to Answers.com, Meme means "A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another." So in an essence a meme is joining into a practice and in the notion of blogging posting about a themed post that someone hosts becomes the meme like Tablescape Thursday or Met Mondays because it has become a weekly practice of the blogging culture.
The strike though things is something I want to learn also.
The new layout is great for the bookcases!
Great job daughter did on the bookcase..I always love a mixture of things...as for the Meme...since your usually write about yourself I first thought it meant "Me Me"...makes some sense no? that's when I was a new blogger...and I love the chair..You always find good stuff at the GW..I don't care what you say...
Your daughter did a great job incorporating your favorite things on the bookshelf. And, that chair!!!!! It was such a great find!!! Have a wonderful week, Nicole
Nina,
Like your blog. I was initially brought to you because of your name, but I like your site regardless of your name.
Also love your chair.
And I also had the same 2 questions but hated to sound like the "newbie" that I am so I never asked. So thanks for asking. I guess that falls under the category of "no question is a dumb question".
Welcome Nana Nina,
That's so funny about your name. My grandies couldn't say "Grandma" when they were very young so they just call me Nina (my actual name). Now they can say Grandma, but Nina is easier and just stuck.
I totally agree with you on the AI thing. Follow my updates on "So You Think You Can Dance" as it progresses. When does "America's Got Talent" start? I'll be giving my opinions on that one, too.
My Bob (husband) doesn't understand how I can knit, blog and watch TV at the same time, but I manage just fine.
Hi Linda,
Hubby is able to use the high school shop and it is very nicely equipped. When he retires from teaching, he'll have to get a shop set up. That sure will be different because he has all the latest equipment right now. I love getting long comments, it's so much more personal! Hugs, Cindy
Hi Linda...
So nice of your stop by my place and check out the metamorphosis in my frenchy studio/office...I just loved reading your sweet comment...thank you, my friend!!!
What a treasured keepsake...having your father-in-law's medals!!! To think that these little medals with some ribbon on them represents a great sacrafice, the price of freedom "paid", such bravery and the commitment made by an individual...really tugs at my ol' heart strings!!!
I loved how you did the shelving in your bedroom...and I think that you must have passed down those gifted decorator genes down to your daughter...it looks fab!!!
Ohhh my...what can I say about your little frenchy treasure find...I love, love, LOVE that chair!!! I would have swooped it up in a "New York minute"...hehe!!! Ooooh...would your chair look fabulous in my frenchy studio/office? I can send you my address, friend! wink!!!
Have a wonderful Wednesday and thanks so much for coming by...
Warmest wishes,
Chari
