Living Room Redo - in progress!

I'm working on re-arranging my living room.
(We live in our living room and have a "keeping room" with the kitchen.)
It's a long room and a little tricky to arrange.
We've ended up with 2 sitting areas -
the sofa in the bay window with a chair to the right,
and a pair of chairs in another place sort of far away.
Do you understand what I mean?
Here's what it looked like in 2009.

I had already taken down the valance in 2011 and removed the red touches
here and there in an effort to lighten up the room.

Actually, Mr. Nest got the ball rolling when he
completely re-arranged everything one day recently while I was out.
Sooooo, first the bookcases on each side of the mantel went acoss the room
and we added a table between them for the TV.
(BTW, we are considering repainting the table to match the bookcases -
whaddaya think?)

Next we pulled the sofa out from the bay window
to try to make a cozier grouping around the fireplace.

By the way, none of the pictures have been relocated
until we are sure where everything is going.

2 disclaimers:
1st - the walls are not a garish yellow like the photo, but rather a soft mustard yello.
2nd - the table and  chairs in front of the French doors are for
our 6 grandies who LOVE to sit there and color for HOURS!
It's gotta stay there for a while.

I like the coziness of it all.....

however, the chairs in front of the bay window are
not quite right.
It looks like a hodge-podge arrangement.
In fact, it IS a hodge-podge!
I need a table there, or matching chairs, or something.
Or should we move the sofa grouping back to the window?
Any ideas?

The blue plaid chair used to be to the right of the sofa
along with a table and the Queen Anne wooden chair.
I like it that way, but it puts the other pair of chairs
all by itself.

I'd love to know if you've had to work
with a rectangular room, and if so,
how you have handled it.
This is a continuing project, for sure -
er, um, along with the basement!
Stay tuned!
Blessings to you!
Linda

Love the 'new look' Linda, and yes I would paint the table to match the bookcases. To resolve the seats near the window I would move the plaid chair to where the other chair is at the moment as it looks 'right' against the window, then place the small table with the plant next to it, and replace that with the other chair into the corner at an angle - hope that makes sense!

I think you've definitely done the right thing by bringing the sofa closer to the fireplace - it makes it much cozier and inviting. Can you take advantage of those sunny bay windows with some plants to give that area its own interest? I love the new look - you have a great room! I have a rectangular living room as well but we use one end of it as the dining room so the living room is basically a square because of that. I like that because it makes it cozier. Huge living rooms are hard - I like breaking them up - TV area, sitting area, library area, desk area - whatever works for you. Anyway love the photos!

I absolutely love the new arrangement with the sofa and chairs forming a cozy area around the fireplace. In the bay window, I love the wing chair, maybe remove the second chair and just add a table and lamp plus some fabulous greenery. Such a wonderful place to sit and read. A chest would also look fabulous there next to the chair. Great new ideas. Hugs, Marty

Linda I love the new arrangement and I really like the wing back chair near your bay window. I agree with Marty about moving the smaller chair and adding a table and lamp near the wing back. This is such a pretty room and you have so many pretty things! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

It definitely looks cozy, Linda! I like it and I can't believe your hubby got the ball rolling! Good for him! : ) I totally am with you on the table. My 19 month old granddaughter has a big floor pad and toddler crayons I got her and she likes doing it. I'm sure I'm going to have a spot for her in the future.

For your bay area, what about moving the floor lamp so it is just out of sight of the big chair, but providing light for anyone sitting in that chair. Move the plant and table {and the magazine basket} over to that area and move the smaller chair over to where the plant/table is. That would be a great spot to cuddle up with a grandchild and read a book!

Hi and yes! I too have a long rectangular living room and do just as you have done. Two seating areas, one for tv viewing, and the other grouped around the fireplace. Mine is a hodgepodge I'm afraid. Your room is just lovely-very inviting.

I saw your thumb nail photo at BNOTP and did a double take. Your living room is so similar to mine! Mostly size and layout, but still, spooky. Thanks for posting. Fun to see other arrangements in a similar space. liz

Love your changes. The sofa looks so nice pulled in toward your fireplace. I like the wing back in the window. Maybe just move the small chair, add a table and lamp and you'll have a perfect little spot to read and sip tea!

Don't scream when I say this!

Consider moving the piano into the bay window. It will fill the space nicely and provide tabletop space for a pretty vignette. The wing chair and lamp can then so into that corner.

Love the nice seating arrangement in front of the fireplace that also allows for TV viewing. Not an easy task to accomplish.

Wonderful job. The room does look comfy and cozy, and that's the look I love. You have the perfect spot for that piano.

I think the arrangement looks great! I would paint the desk and keep the large chair by the bay windows and remove the smaller one. Add a round side table and maybe a floor lamp and plants. Make it look like a reading nook. Thank you for stopping by my blog and the sweet comment you left. I am a new follower!

I would leave the TV table black, as it makes the black TV less conspicuous. I love your blue sofa with the new blue and white pillows. Isn't it nice that blue is in fashion?!
