A French Cow - Framed!

Do you like cows?
I've always liked roosters,
but lately (as my granddaughter would say - with her left hand raised halfway)
"I triple-love cows."
French cows.
How can you not love a cow.......the giver of milk,
and eventually.....
cream, yogurt, cheese, ice cream, frozen yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc.
Recently, I acquired this page of cows from an old 1858 French journal.

Even the back side had a wonderful French article.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted to frame it as one large, 2 cow-print,
or cut it into two prints.  Either way, I  would lose the back.
Debbie at Confessions of a Plate Addict had a wonderful idea.
Make a color copy of the print (98 cents) and keep the original intact.
It is a black & white and naturally aged photo, so the color copy just kept those neutral tones.

I attached the cow print to a piece of scrapbooking paper with scrapbooking tape to make its odd
"almost 8 X 10" size work in the frame.
I'm trying to use what I have rather than get a mat cut....may do that later....maybe not.

Next dilemma - what color frame to use??

I dug through some old frames and came up with  #1 - simple  & gold....

Ah, I like the #2 black for the humble cow - but alas, no glass for the frame?????

A  #3 silver tone????

Maybe this  #4- old antique-looking gold frame????

Hmmmmm.......

I do have another one of these frames.
Is it too fancy for the humble cow?
Or just right for the fancy "vache française"?

What do you think? #1, 2, 3, or 4?
I'll bet some of you might even suggest some AS Chalk Paint...distressed???
Blessings to you,
Linda
p.s.  Enjoy some ice cream  : )

Oh how perfect. Love the cow prints. I like both the gold and the black frames. It also looks fabulous in your vignette. Great picture. Hugs, Marty

Great cow print, and so smart to put scrapbook paper behind to make it the right size. I like the gold frame as it has that 'aged' look. You could even add a smidge of black or ORB to the edge of the frame to darken it a bit, but I like it the way it is too. Happy weekend.

Ooh, well, the black frame caught my eye right away, Linda. I think it looks good with the black and white feel, but I also like the last one. Marty at A Stroll Thru Life always finds such great detailed frames that she uses for her animal prints. She may have some inspiration for you.

Linda I love the frame you chose! What about dry brushing it a bit with old white. Great pictures! Martina

I vote for the fancy gold frame. Perfect, especially if you have another.

I was thinking that you could also take a color copy of the BACK of the page and us it as the mat or the background for your cow picture. That way you get the French words. I think the frame should be less dominant than the picture, ie, bring attention to the subject, the cow.

I have a hard time picking frames also. I wonder is it too fancy, not fancy enough, etc. I have always been a huge chicken fan, but also find myself loving the cows too. Trying to make room for a few around the house now.

I like the idea of using the a photocopy of the back as a background and I think it would look nice framed in black.

Thanks for visiting me!

I also love the idea of using a copy of the words behind the print. My favorite frame is the ornate gold with the simple black a close second.

Second, I really like the gold frame as well and it sounds like others have posted some great ideas if you want to do more...but I like your French Vanilla Cow just as you have it!

I vote for the gold frame, but I like the idea of dry brushing it just a bit. I wonder if you copy the French words, could you wrap a mat with the words? Just a thought. I love cows. My daddy raised cattle when I was growing up.

I like the ornate gold frame, especially if you have a pair. I agree that copying the French text and using as a background for your photo (instead of mat) would be lovely.

I like them all with exception to the silver...seems not to be enough contrast between the print and the frame...but either way...that book plate steals the show! I love it!

Ilene said...

I think the silver frame with a flat black or dark gray mat or maybe black are dark gray scrapbook paper would look nice.

I don't think you could get to fancy for a fabulous French Cow, but I DO like the idea of a little wash of white on it. Any way you frame it, it's a wonderful find!! Thanks so much for linking up with VIF! xo Debra
