Finishing the Basement-Part 2, Fun Finds & a Question!

After 32 years, we're finishing the basement!
This is part 2 in our saga.
I also want to share some fun finds and I have a
questions for you - help!
First, if you just do one thing for your basement,
let there be light - lots of light!

Then install closet doors...

Add some walls....

and a door.....

We've added flooring.....a vinyl wood look-alike
for its durability and ease of cleaning.
There's always a possibility of sawdust from hubby's shop
and we don't want to hyperventilate over wood floors getting damaged.

This is the main room - office/playroom for the grandies.
It's not decorated or arranged yet.....nothing on the walls, etc. However,
what in the world should I do with the windows?
I like the bamboo roman shades, but I need to soften the look in this area?
Long window treatments are fine and can be casual, but
what do you do with the area under the windows?
A valance?  maybe? Don't want any fussiness.
I don't want to cover the windows....just give them a finished look....
even make them look bigger!
Any ideas out there????  Please!!

I got a couple of GW gems recently.....
these 2 old books and a $2 white ironstone gravy boat
made in Spain that, interestingly enough, matches my
white ironstone Johnson Brothers plates!
The book on top (dating 1883) is a Danish to French dictionary!
I don't read Danish, but I do read French - how fun!
But, regardless, it is a lovely old leather book!

I'm thinking of framing some old maps for the basement office area,
along with some memorabilia of my FIL's time
during WWII in the Pacific.
Would love any thoughts or suggestions on the windows,
considering there probably won't be a sofa down there -
at least while the grandies are so young.
I know there are a lot of very creative people out there!
Blessings to you,
Linda

You can't go wrong with Romans, maybe mounted slightly higher above the window trim at the top, to give the windows some height. How about some windowseat/bookcases under each window. Your space is coming along great. I am envious. I miss our basement at our last house. Can't wait to see the end results. Blessings, Barb

Great books, Linda! I had fabric roman shades for all my windows in our old house. I just loved them and I could use a fabric of my choice to go with the room. I got the function of a shade and the softness of fabric.

Oh what a super area. I totally love it. I would kill for all the space and storage. I like the idea of the shades or you could also do just simple panels and that would look fabulous also. You don't have to do anything under the windows, just take the curtains to the floor. The new gravy boat and the books are fabulous finds. Love, love, love them. Thanks tons for joining TTT. Hugs, marty

Your basement is looking good Linda and I think roman shades would be perfect for there!

I agree...roman shades sound good, but if you want to make the windows look bigger...go with floor length panels and install them as far out as you can and this should make them look bigger.
Great gravy boat from GW.

Blessings,
Linda

Basements are a wonderful concept, especially when they can be finished out for usable space. Yours looks terrific! It's unusual for homes here to have a basement, but oddly enough we have one. It isn't large and certainly not one we can finish out. It house our hot water heater, and AC/Heat system. There is some storage room, but it's not water proofed. ;-)
Great GW finds. I need to make a GW stop this week.

If you decide to go with the bamboo roman shades, Overstock has great prices. Good luck!

I just visited a store that installed vinyl "wood" flooring. It looked fantastic. He said is was so easy to clean and he had a lot of foot traffic.

Hi Linda
I am finally getting around to visiting!

Love how your basement looks!

I really need an ironstone gravy boat.

Hi Linda...Still lovin' that gravy boat...and that fabulous book! Your basement looks amazing! I like the idea of roman shades, especially with the grandies playing down there. Shelves or cubbies under them, maybe? They have some great stuff at Ikea! Happy week!...hugs...Debbie

Basements are great bonus space especially when living in a small home. My basement windows are half the size of yours and I didn't want to block any light so I applied a clear film on them for privacy that allows the light to still come in. Since you want a finished look, why not a fabric valence mounted high to maximize the incoming light.

Basements add a lot of wonderful new living space to a home. We recently finished off ours and we love it. Unfortunately we don't have those nice windows. If we did I'd probably use shutters or wood shades. Loving the books you found so cheap. Wow!

Love your GW finds as always! We just put those louvered doors in a bedroom closet and love the look of them. We're going to replace all the sliding doors with these.

Everything is looking wonderful. Great piece of ironstone and the dictionary is pretty neat too. The windows would look bigger with roman shades and long drapes on each side something simple like neutral canvas. the bottom could remain as is or build a small seat that lifts up for storing grands toys. You could cover it with a canvas pillow and use as a seat.
I made a huge storage/ seat in my basement covered in simple dropcloth over king size pillows, and I love it. You can see those results here.

Your basement is looking great. I have read that a window will look larger if you hang them high and have the drape sit almost outside of the window. We are working on finishing our basement and our windows are even smaller so I wish you good luck.
